Tension was palpable this Wednesday evening at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam while the local club, Ajax, was fighting against the club from Cyprus APOEL Nicosia.

In the first leg of the Champions League qualifier, André Onana had a lot of work at his post and he just as well helped keep the draw. So they needed a win in the return leg to qualify. The Cyprus club was strong and decided to play very low block.

Their game plan was simple: take advantage of a defensive error to counter attack and score, then install an impassable fortress in front of the goals of their goalkeeper.

Ajax must have been more than patient, before their first goal. Edson Alvarez, the defender bought by Ajax to replace former captain Matthijs de Ligt transferred to Juventus, scored the decisive goal. The 21-year-old Mexico international opened the scoring in the 43rd minute.

Then, after missing many opportunities, captain and playmaker Dusan Tadic found the back of the net with a powerful shot in 80th minute to offer a 2-0 lead to the semifinalists of the last edition.

Cameroon international goalkeeper André Onana will be in the Champions League group stage of the 2019/2020 European football season.
