Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo, has praised the professional rivalry he and Lionel Messi shared while in Spain.
Cristiano Ronaldo spoke recently in an interview broadcast on TVI, about the “healthy” rivalry between him and Lionel Messi.
“I really admire the career he has had so far and for his part he has already said that he had trouble when I left the Spanish league because it was a rivalry he appreciated,” Ronaldo said.
“It’s a good rivalry in football but it’s no exception. Michael Jordan had rivals in basketball, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost were great rivals in Formula 1, the only common point between all the great rivalries in the sports is that they are healthy.”
Ronaldo intimated that having Messi as a competitor keeps pushing him to excel. “I have no doubt that Messi makes me a better player and vice versa… When I win trophies it must sting him and it’s the same for me when he wins.”
On their relationship (Messi and Ronaldo) off the field, Cristiano Ronaldo stressed the respect that reigns between the two men. “I have an excellent professional relationship with Messi because we have been sharing the same moments for fifteen years…I have never been to dinner with him, but why not in the future, I would have no problem doing so,”the former Real Madrid player wished.
Despite his departure from Spain, Ronaldo again found himself competing with Messi to win the UEFA best player of the season last season, with Dutchman and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. The winner will be known on August 29.
