The President of the Republic, Paul Biya, has extended the mandate of municipal councillors in Cameroon to February 29, 2020.

The extension came in a decree signed this Monday July 15, by the Head of State, who failed to give any reason for prolonging the tenure of councillors.

This is the second time President Paul Biya is extending the mandate of the current municipal councillors, whose term of service expired in 2018 when they were first prolonged.

It’s unclear if this latest move by the president is aimed at executing his promise of effective transfer of power to local councils. But, as things stand, power is still highly centralized in Yaounde.
